COLLABORATIVE WORKS

Tyrannus Rex
A Hotel TV Production

By Leo and Sophiko
August 2022

Tyrannus Rex is a fairy-tale reminiscent, comical retelling of Oedipus Rex or Oedipus Tyrannus or Oedipus the King. While most of the film pokes fun at the absurdity and irony of the source material, it also aims to stay true to the political nature of Classical Greek theatre and recontextualize the play for a more modern audience. An attempt to bring the joy back into the process of studying and creating theatre, Tyrannus Rex is an ode to theatre, both in a historical and personal context.

This multimedia piece explores the discrepancies between the “threat” transgender people are accused of posing and the experiences of being a transgender person, shown through quotes from recent news headlines and articles, as well as photos of the artists’ lives. The placement of the work on a mirror forces the viewer to confront themselves when viewing the piece, offering reflection on their personal views of transgender people. With this piece, the artists transcribe their own lives, with their own hands. This piece was displayed in Kansas City at Night Jar Gallery's Queering Archives exhibition in 2022.
